Palm Beach Atlantic University President William M.B. Fleming, Jr. has announced the appointment of Courtney Lovely as the University’s next Director of Athletics. Lovely will officially assume her duties in June.
“Courtney will continue the legacy established by Carolyn Stone and her recognized leadership skills will enable Sailfish athletics to remain a national leader in the NCAA Division II and the Sunshine State Conference,” President Fleming said. “She is a rising star on the intercollegiate athletic scene and is a person of deep faith, determination and integrity. I welcome Courtney’s knowledge and experience to the President’s Cabinet.”
Lovely came to PBA in August 2015 as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations, Senior Woman Administrator and Title IX Deputy Coordinator. During her time in West Palm Beach, she’s led several departments including athletic training, strength and conditioning and business operations while also serving as a sport administrator and handling gender equity and Title IX issues. She has also been charged with oversight of all mandatory reports to both the NCAA and the Sunshine State Conference.
“I’m honored to be selected as the successor to Carolyn Stone, who has led Sailfish Athletics with grace, integrity and a commitment to excellence,” said Lovely. “It has been my honor to serve alongside her and to learn from such an accomplished leader in higher education. Today is very humbling for me and I am grateful for the confidence that President Fleming and the Board of Trustees have shown me in making my professional dream come true. I am excited to work with our coaches, staff and the greater PBA community to continue the work of developing Christian Game Changers in the classroom, on the field and court and also in the community.”
Prior to arriving in West Palm Beach, Lovely served at the NCAA National Office in Indianapolis as an assistant director in Academic and Membership Affairs. While there she was responsible for developing the Division II educational strategic plan, serving as a liaison to the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Division II Legislation Committee and the Division II Membership Committee. As an assistant director in Leadership Development, she was the primary administrator for the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum, NCAA Career in Sports Forum and NCAA Division II and III diversity grants.
Before working at the NCAA, Lovely served as the assistant to the director of athletics at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. In this position, she was a member of the athletic department’s senior staff and was responsible for managing the Georgia State University Athletic Association and the planning and coordination of athletics’ special events including activities with the University’s inaugural football season.
She received her master’s degree in sports administration from Georgia State University and her bachelor’s degree in public relations from Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia.
Lovely currently serves on the NCAA’s Management Council as the SSC representative, a group that reports to the President's Council in the NCAA Governance structure and recommends administrative policy and regulations that govern the division as well as reviewing and acting on recommendations from the Division II committee structure and from Division II representatives to committees with Association-wide functions.
She is a member of the College Women Sports Awards (CWSA) Board of Directors, an active member of Women Leaders in College Sports (formerly NACWAA), the Professional Association of Athlete Development Specialists (PAADS) and a graduate of the NCAA and Division II Athletic Directors Association Women and Minorities Mentoring Program, Women Leaders in College Sports/NCAA Institute for Administrative Advancement and NCAA Leadership Institute.
